straight outta atl
Despite the east coast provenance of the hip hop scene, the southern lab has established itself as the genre’s powerhouse multiple times over the hop hop timeline. More recently, the trap artists coming out of ATL have taken the world by storm and finally cemented rap as the mainstream sound. 1
Trap’s signature sound has found a wide following all over the world. It is creating a legacy that is uniquely its own withing the context of the artist’s circumstances and social context. However trap as a musical device has honestly found a life of its own and has melded identities with the most unexpected of places.
Here are some global trap tracks that still blow my mind to this day. “Trap Beldi”‘s ISSAM hails from Morocco 🇲🇦 (shout out al); “rayon” is by alyona alyona, from Ukraine 🇺🇦, featuring Fatbelly from Kazakhstan 🇰🇿 and “Scoo Scoo” is by Abo El Anwar from Egypt 🇪🇬. They all utilize the basic trap structural patterns and blend it with their own cultural subtleties to make something that sounds so familiar yet completely next level. The language might be foreign but the fact that it bumps is universal.
I have some complex feelings around this but that’s for another day 🤷🏾♂️ ↩︎
