Melii

As the sun sets on the last summer of the decade I've chosen to highlight a transitional artist that works well for both summer and autumn.

The second spanish baddie to be highlighted on groupbool: Melii stuns with both looks and lyricism.

My love for this artist stems from her seamless transitioning: singing to rapping, english to spanish and back again. She weaves between styles gracefully and fluidly, no small feat for a 20 year old. Raised in Harlem, Melii was smooched by the limelight for the first time on Meek Mill’s album *Championships.*

However, since then she has proven herself hella versatile and way more than a random feature:

Her song Slow for Me has the traditional summer thump, and showcases her singing and Tory Lanez’s rapping. The track works beautifully because their styles are simulaneously juxtaposed and paralleled: Both artists are hispanic singers and rappers with similar transitioning talents. However, Tory has a gravelly autotuned sound that contrasts Melii’s high pitch softness to an effect of bringing out the best in both voices. Definitely a track that will get your hips swaying ooh la la.

I tried to do right by you boy

but you still did me wrong

Statistically, anyone who’s ever caught feelings can resonate with this line. Nena is probably my favorite Melii single. I have no idea what she’s saying for 40% of the song, but her crooning and heartbreaking story gets me.

Melii is scorned by one she loves– a high chemistry relationship she clings to when it falls flat due to a disrespectful and presumptuous mans. His words make her want to stay but the disconnect between actions and sweet talking breaks her heart. He values material things and projects ultimate teeny 🍆 energy: he gets with other girls blatantly and she’s done with his shit. She spins the tale with a really soft latin beat, pretty lyrics, and solid bars.

Nena has been a key seasonal transition from summer to autumn, with a softer sound and message of new beginnings, growth, and necessary endings I associate with the changing of seasons.

My Type

Becky G has good verse, Saweetie is questionable, but finally, Melii GOES IN.

Short, not so sweet, and right to the point: this verse showcases Melii’s straight fire flow. She begins with speedy spanish then slows it down in english. This bad bitch verse outlines exactly what she, nay we all, need and deserve from a mans– polar opposite from the one in Nena.

Her discography and messages testify to how stunning Melii’s sound, values, and even aesthetic are; truly an artist for every season.
